Description

Hello, My name is Shaymaa , an Egyptian Cardiologist and musician and this is my video for Hangeul fest 2025. For this year, I decided to sing the old national anthem for Egypt called " eslamy ya misr" together with a Hieroglyphic hymn called " the first call" for Amun, which was sung in the grand opening ceremony of the Avenue of sphinxes in Luxor.

Arabic language is a very rich language containing unique letters & phonemes but it is extremely flexible at the same time. That’s why it is really challenging when trying to transcript Arabic pronunciation using foreign characters but not vice versa. This attributed to the fact that some letters are exclusively present in Arabic which made this process exhausting yet interesting & entertaining due to my love for Korean language.

The theme of the contest was marvelous since it is not just bound by mere linguistic challenges of transcription between different languages of distant origins, but because it aimed at reflecting the different cultures of nations. Egypt is a historically rich country & is famous for being an intersection point for different cultures starting from the Ancient Egyptians all the way through the Romans then the Islamic and Arabic culture, all blended with the Afro-Asian blend and centric location between the three ancient continents.

This made the choice of the song even more challenging because if I chose only an Arabic song that means I would be missing a huge part of our culture. So, I decided to sing a medley between an ancient Egyptian hymn called “The first call” for God Amun, which was sung for the first time in the huge celebration held in Luxor for the reopening of the Avenue of sphinxes, together with a poetic Arabic song which was used as the national anthem for Egypt from 1923 until 1936 and it was inspired from the 1919 revolution in Egypt to fight against the British occupation.

I Hope you like the song and I hope those who would like to learn korean and Arabic finds this video and newly proposed transcription system helpful.

Thanks alot to my Mom for the endless support, my cousin Ibrahim for filming me and my friends Nesma and Mariam for helping💙

location:
Giza Necropolis & "Al-Seheimy" 's house in Al-Moez st. in Cairo.
